Smart Energy GB is an independent organisation, created by the government, to develop one of the largest national behaviour change campaigns Great Britain has ever seen. They are leading one of the biggest consumer engagement and behaviour change campaigns of our generation.

The Challenge 

By the end of 2020, around 53 million smart meters will be fitted in over 27 million premises across Great Britain.  This digital upgrade is one of the biggest infrastructure projects of our lifetimes: it will empower consumers and, enable a more energy-efficient system for Great Britain.

Smart Energy GB is the national campaign for Britain’s smart meter rollout, leading one of the biggest consumer engagement and behaviour change campaigns of our generation.

With the campaign fully underway in paid-for and earned channels across the country, consumer awareness and engagement with smart meters is increasing rapidly. Smart Energy GB’s digital presence is the key to ensuring everyone in Great Britain understands smart meters, the rollout and knows how they can get one.

Smart Energy GB needed a web platform and partner which could help them realise their goal of delivering a high impact digital experience which supports the scale of the project and is accessible to a wide range of diverse audiences.


The Solution 

Smart Energy GB chose ClerksWell for our technical skill and expertise in delivery. We work alongside multiple agencies translating designs into technical builds and supporting external and internal stakeholder goals through the website.

ClerksWell’s technology MVP is keeping Smart Energy GB at the head of the Sitecore product roadmap and helping them to derive business value from the very latest technology. ClerksWell’s Digital Strategist MVP is currently planning website personalisation strategies to keep their site customer-centric.


The Outcome 

ClerksWell delivered the new fully responsive website on a fresh Sitecore instance on time and within budget in just three months. We have also ensured the solution is scalable, giving Smart Energy GB the knowledge and tools to adjust the site in accordance with the changing requirements of the five-year campaign. As the campaign continues digital is going to become increasingly important in helping people to benefit from smart meters, by giving them the tools to use the new technology in their homes and get their gas and electricity under control.

Smart Energy GB’s digital presence needs to support its huge and challenging task to engage the entire nation with smart meters, and it has invested in a platform to support its digital requirements for years to come. The website will continue to grow and we are already building a new interactive area with extra functionality.

I think together we have achieved a site that to those in the know is impressively sophisticated, and to those less confident online is easy to navigate and very intuitive. And they’ve broken some digital norms whilst they’re at it and created what I believe will become new benchmarks
